They are playing Christmas music
in the shops. I thought that this was much too early, but it would seem we are but weeks away. Ive been rather swept up in things lately and have been off of the whole blogging thing. I’ll be back to it soon. In the mean time here is our shiney new website for Draw and the life drawing classes… www.draw-brighton.co.uk Fig 1. Draw logo (typeface by Colophon)

Painting is dumb
Music and literature have always had more influence on the things that I want to paint and draw than visual work. Painters, printmakers, creators of tactile work make me want to draw, to make lines and marks, to revel in the manipulation of surfaces and to grapple with the how and the what of image making. But it is the poetry of verbal storytelling that gives me hunger for the why. Sometimes it...

Been a while
Haven’t written anything on here for a while; mostly been posting on the Life Drawing Blog of late. Ive been quite busy preparing for the next Drawing Circus, the Big Draw and White Night in October but I thought Id sit down and root through the drawings of the last few months. Here are a few life drawings, Rosie very patiently sat for them. Fig. 1 Rosie at Rinaldo’s I spent a...

Molotov Jukebox
Fig 1. Molotov Jukebox For anyone that doesn’t know Molotov Jukebox, the kings of Gystep this post will be a very necessary eduction. I first met Nat, lead singer and dynamo of the group when she life modeled for BLDS last year; her patience as a model is belied by the passionate energy of her personality and probably owes a lot to her stage and screen background (About a Boy, Harry...

New paper
Fig 1. Frankie on new paper I like trying out new paper. At the moment I like using a very smooth ivory 240-300gsm Bockingford watercolour paper; off-white Somerset printing paper is also surprisingly good to draw on although it is very soft and doesn’t suit hard pencil marks. I recently found Moleskine paper takes pencil beautifully and on a quest for a good smooth paper realised that...

Fringe report review of Fugitive Ink...
John Park, editor of online Fringe culture review magazine ‘Fringe Report’ made a welcome appearance at the private view for our Open House Fugitive Ink, here’s what he had to say… ‘Jake Spicer is an artistic tour de force. His focus is women, in paint and drawing, naked, in costume. They relax, sprawl, pose on beds, sofas and chairs. The interiors they inhabit and the costumes...

Spring has sprung
Its very suddenly Spring, Ive been to the beach, received my first minor sun burn of the year and been able to leave the studio in the evening just a shirt (and trousers, just no coat). We’ve had the first balcony picnic and the first film and fold night of the year and I’m feeling thoroughly positive about the looming presence of May on the calendar. Here’s the week in a few...

Orson and Valentine
A puppet play and Brighton Festival Fringe Event by Daisy Jordon.  ”Orson and Valentine” is a darkly beautiful puppet play based on a French medieval folk tale, using hand-crafted table-top and shadow puppets to recount in miniature the captivating story of infant twin brothers abandoned in the woods. Whilst one brother is adopted and brought up in aristocracy, the other is raised by...

So much for regular posting
So my attempts at a regular post have been thwarted somewhat by a wonderfully refreshing lack of sitting-staring-at-a-computer time. I figured though that with lots of exciting things going on I should probably post some kind of update, so here it is. Whats been happening lately… Life Drawing has been happily ticking along, hight lights being a Tarot themed drawing session, Marilyn Monroe...
