This is the cover image for our next Drawing Circus event ‘Prologue’ at The Old Market.

It is also going to be featured as one of the prints in Animal Vegetable Mineral’s upcoming Edible Print Project. I was flattered to be asked to submit to the project which is masterminded by genre defining food artist Tasha Marks. Keep your eyes peeled for more details.

Here are some drawings I did at Laura Burgess’s themed life drawing classes at Draw…

Recently the themes on a Thursday have been; Apocalypse - with Felix reading from revelations to introduce the session, Frankie posing as a doll in a beautiful dress and performing puppet moves for us in between poses, and Lucy interpreting punctuation marks with her poses - complete with a playlist of songs including one about not wanting to be an Apostrophe. Jake Spicer has been producing some beautiful drawings at the sessions, which I thought I’d share with you, because I keep forgetting to take photos - although the drawings are far more intriguing and delightful than a photo could be. This Thursday will be a fairies theme, with Amy who posed for our Art Nouveau session modelling with pixie ears and fairy backdrop.

This Tuesday Gary Goodman will be the artist of the month at ETC, giving a talk on his artistic practice and performing poetry for us between 7-9pm. Gary’s talk will be accompanied by the usual tea, coffee, wine and impeccable company that you can always expect at out ETC sessions.

Hosted by Hester Berry and Jake Spicer, 7pm-9pm at New England House, Free.

Rain and un-started projects

…is tonight’s theme. Rain outside; un-started projects littering the studio like little paper thought bubbles. I have draws full of these fleeting little jots of inspirations that have yet to become paintings, sketches for paintings or even completed drawings. I rather like them as they are, although I’d like to grow a few into something more.

Each year I sort through my drawings, throw away the majority, keep the favorites, swap some for coins to by more paper and begin the cycle again. A few of the drawings go into a pile mentally labeled ‘to be continued’. Here’s one of my favorites that has been on that pile for a couple of years, getting tattier each time it is dredged from the plan chest. One day it might grow into something more, but for now I quite like it as it is.

Last night I popped along to the private view of Tim Patrick’s exhibtion ‘Paintings of Light and Quiet’ at Gallery 40 in Brighton’s North Laine. It was a refreshing and inspiring evening’s viewing; compounding my reawakened love of paint. I wont spend too long expounding the many virtues of Tim’s work but instead would encourage everyone to get along there as soon as possible to see some fine examples of contemporary figure painting.

Donna Fullman

A few months back Brighton indie songstress, life class attendee and friend Donna Fullman asked me to undertake some drawings for her upcoming album ‘Inner World’. We sat down for several sittings, playing around with still life sketches and portraits all rendered in very unpredictable ink. Fueled by coffee and danish pastries I drew this and Donna added letters; we’re rather pleased with it.

Donna will be playing the Green Door Store on the 29th May and if indie, folky loveliness is your thing I recommend you get down there too.
